How to Play Marriage Cards against the computer
Objective: Score 1,000 points from tricks before your opponents do. At the start of each round, after seven cards have been dealt to each player, one card is placed face down and players compete for it in a “bidding” round. Players take turns stating how many points they are willing to take (110, 120, etc.). The player who bids the highest takes the trick, discards two cards to their opponents, and designates the trump suit.
A general tip for beginners playing Marriage is to not overbid during the auction. The winner receives points if they achieve their bid. If not, they go into the negative.
During the “play” phase, players take turns, starting with the player who won the bid. Opponents must play a card of the same suit. Within a suit, the trick goes to the player who played the highest card. Trumps beat all other cards in rank. After all the cards have been played, the points are tallied.
Card rankings in Marriage
The game traditionally uses a reduced deck of 24 cards (nines through aces of all suits). The highest-ranking cards are aces (11 points), followed by tens (10 points), kings (4 points), queens (3 points), and jacks (2 points). Nines are worth 0 points.
The game also features “marriage combinations”: a pair of a queen and a king of the same suit. If you have one in your hand, you have a good chance of gaining an advantage in bidding and scoring points. It is important to announce the presence of a marriage in your hand in time to claim it. If you are forced to discard a card from a marriage during the game without having announced it, the extra points will not count.
- The highest marriage (king and queen of hearts) is worth 100 points.
- A diamond marriage (king and queen of diamonds) is worth 80 points.
- A club marriage is worth 60 points.
- A spade marriage is worth 40 points.
- An ace marriage, which means having all four aces in your hand, is worth 200 points.
How to Announce a Marriage
You can only announce a marriage after you take a trick. It’s simple: Play the king, queen, or ace immediately. This signals that you have a winning combination, which is equivalent to declaring a trump suit. Other players cannot play cards of a different suit against your trump.
