Corner Checkers is a variation of the board game Checkers. Two players compete to move their pieces across a 64-square board. The aim is to move all your pieces into your opponent’s home.
Rules for Corner Checkers (12×12)
Each game begins with the pieces arranged in a 3×4 starting position. The bottom corner of the 64-square chequerboard is occupied by 12 white pieces and the diagonally opposite corner by 12 black pieces.
The aim is to be the first player to move all their pieces to the opposite corner of the board (their opponent’s home). White makes the first move. Under the classic rules, pieces can move to adjacent empty squares in four directions: right, left, forward and backward.
Each player moves only one piece per turn. As well as moving to an adjacent empty square, players can also perform a jump: they can jump over one of their own or an opponent’s checkers to land on an empty space. A player may perform multiple jumps in a single turn.
The length of the jump is not fixed: a player may end the move on a suitable square or continue moving as long as there is a valid path on the board.
The game ends when one of the following conditions is met
- All checkers have been moved into the opponent’s corner (win).
- One or more of the player’s checkers remain on their home board after 40 moves (loss);
- A draw.
A good strategy in Corners is to create opportunities for jumping moves. Your opponent (the computer) will certainly try to set up a path that enables them to move as far as possible in one turn. In this situation, try to block your opponent’s moves and exploit their path.
